N0RTHWEST JIU JITSU ACADEMY

At Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy, we teach safe, functional and technical classes that are fitness-oriented. Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is curriculum-based, designed by 5th degree black belt (under Rigan Machado), Professor Brian J. Johnson. We have classes for youth, teens, adults and ladies only, and we have gi and no-gi programs.

Little Dragons (4 Years Old)

Class Description

This unique program is specifically designed to teach the needs of our youngest martial artist. Children learn skills such as sharing, taking turns, following directions, focus and respecting others which are fundamental to any activity. Children also build sport literacy through running , jumping and other age appropriate, game – based activities. From here the students will move in one of two directions. Taekwondo: Junior ninjas: (5-6) or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Little Rollers: (5- 6). This Program also includes our Character Development Program.

Character Development Program

We teach, in all of our youth programs, the number one character development program in North America POWerful words by Dr Robyn Silverman. Every month we teach a POWerful character word in every class. This sometimes involves a mat chat, or special lesson. Many schools state that children will learn these core values. We are unique in that we actively teach them in our curriculum.

Little Rollers (5 - 6 Years Old)

Class Description

Children are taught the basics of Jiu-Jitsu, including positions, sweeps, and sparring in an age-appropriate, play-based format. This format helps children enjoy learning, giving them an opportunity to be praised for growth and behavior, creating self-esteem, respect, discipline, and a sense of accomplishment. We do not emphasize submissions, and focus on how to work safely and respectively with a partner. Students will progress to Youth Jiu-Jitsu (10-12 years old). This Program also includes our Character Development Program.

High level instruction and a class of welcoming people who have become my second family. Offers classes up to six days a week at no extra costs so I can train as much as I want, and classes are offered in both the morning and night so I can train enough regardless of my schedule. The instructor has cultivated a culture of respect and safety, so I do not have to worry about injury regardless of who I am training with, I can just have fun, stay in shape, and learn Jiu-Jitsu.

Wonderful school, teachers are very excellent and experienced. I have two children attending for the past year, they both enjoy the instruction, structure and coaches. The coaches make learning enjoyable while implementing the fundamentals and disciplines needed. The fantastic hard working ladies at the desk are always a joy to see when entering and keep you up-to-date on everything or if you have any questions.

I’ve been training with the Bateson family since I was 13 years old. I’m a 40 year old man with 2 boys who also train there. There’s really no words good enough to describe the culture at this school. It truly is a family carácter development centre. I highly recommend and encourage everyone to come out and give Martial Arts a try. Whether it be Jui Jitsu, Taekwondo, kickboxing or Kung Fu there’s something for everyone.

This is a fantastic place for the entire family! Both myself and my 12 year old daughter have been learning BJJ here for over 3 years now and I can’t wait for the year when we are rolling together! It’s a very structured program teaching you proper technique that slowly builds on itself as you improve over the years. At every step it’s clear how to keep yourself as well as your partner safe from injury. (Well as much as you can in any martial art) As a woman in a male dominant activity, this is absolutely the place to be. The BJJ family is respectful of all people and I’ve never felt intimidated in class.

“As a busy mom, I look forward to my weekly BJJ classes at NWJJA Maple Ridge. My Jiu Jitsu journey began almost 11 years ago after months of watching my son, and then my husband, join Jiu Jitsu and love it, I decided I needed to try it too.

With Jiu Jitsu training I have gained strength, confidence in my acquired skills and made some great friendships. I highly recommend NWJJA to anyone that wants to be part of a school that has students that want to be there to learn, grow and respect others.”

As a woman training in jiujitsu, it is important to me that I can always feel safe in my school. My instructor, Perry Bateson always treats me as an equal in the school, and always ensures my safety.

We can train hard, but we are always taught how to keep each other safe. His positive attitude is reflected in how all the students treat each other. All students are treated with equal respect.

I have trained an average of 5 days a week for 7 years with Northwest Jiujitsu, and never have I been hurt in class by someone, or made to feel uncomfortable or unsafe. I feel like my Jiujitsu team is family. I can turn to them for anything on and off the mats.

“I have been training at Batesons and NWJJA for 19 years. Under the experienced guidance of coach Perry Bateson, I have been trained in various martial arts here over the years, including, Tae Kwon Do, boxing, kick boxing, Kung Fu, self defence and Jiu Jitsu. I have become a well-rounded martial artist, focusing specifically on Tae Kwon Do and Jiu Jitsu.

The school also has a character development program with a new word each month. I have used the tools I learned in the character development program in my day to day life and also practice these words with my 3 daughters using the work sheets and “Parents Perch”.

Martial arts is a way of life for me. I used these teachings in all areas of my life and therefore am richer with my family because of it.
From the moment I walked through the front door of Bateson’s, I have felt like I belonged. At the front desk you are always greeted with a smile and the utmost respect. The staff have always been very professional and knowledgeable
